The University of Tennessee at Martin Office of University Outreach is offering a series of online ACT prep courses throughout the summer for students and teachers preparing for the tests. UT Martin’s ACT prep workshops and courses are sponsored by the Tennessee Department of Education and are free to Tennessee high school students and teachers. All courses will be held over Zoom, so participants must have access to a computer with audio and video capabilities.
ACT Success Tactics Workshops will teach students strategies for managing questions and saving time in English and Reading and Math and Science Reasoning. At the end of the course, students also receive a detailed plan for practice opportunities to further improve their test scores. Each course is held during a two-hour period. To see when these workshops will be offered, go to www.utm.edu/actprep.
University Outreach is also offering Mastery Classes from 5-7 p.m., June 6-9 and June 27-30, which provide expanded and in-depth ACT prep instruction. Students can take a full practice exam and learn strategies not taught in the success tactics workshops. Students are expected to attend all four sessions.
University Outreach will be offering ACT Deep Dive: Exploring Geometry and Algebra In-Depth workshops from 5-7 p.m., June 15 and July 5. Students will review formulas from earlier high school math courses and how to utilize them on the exam’s word problems. The workshops also include a comprehensive review of the geometry and algebra problems covered on the exam.
ACT workshops for teachers will be offered from 1-3 p.m., July 27 and Aug. 3. Each two-hour session teaches educators how to access and understand their school’s ACT data, what resources are available to them, how to connect lessons to ACT standards, as well as how to help students study for the test, prepare for potential challenges and efficiently work through test questions. Teachers can receive one Professional Development Point (PDP) for attending a session.
UT Martin adjunct faculty member and author Alex Beene will teach the courses. Beene currently serves as a lead instructor for Tennessee Adult Education in three counties and works primarily with rising high school juniors and seniors needing academic help with standardized testing.
Participants must register before the session. For more information, go to www.utm.edu/actprep or contact Jennifer Cooper at jlcooper@utm.edu.
